The arena was opened on October 21, 2005 as the Charlotte Bobcats Arena for a concert by The Rolling Stones and on November 5, 2005 it hosted its first Bobcats game. The arena is owned by the city of Charlotte, and is operated by the Bobcats.

Also the arena is the home of the Charlotte Checkers, a minor-league hockey team that plays in the ECHL. The arena hosted the 2008 ACC Men's Basketball Tournament, and it is expected that will host many NCAA basketball games. The arena is used for sporting events, musical acts, family productions, and many other large entertainment performances such as concerts, circuses, and professional wrestling.
