‘Elkhart’ city is situated in Elkhart County of Indiana in the USA. This city is 15 miles east of South Bend, 110 miles east of Chicago and 150 miles north of Indianapolis. It is most populous out of the two cities of Elkhart-Goshen Metropolitan Statistical Area.

This region was mainly inhabited by the Ottawa, Chippewa and Potawatomi Indian Tribes in the 19th century before it turned into Elkhart. Pulaski Village was established here with a Post Office, mill and a few houses on the northern side of St. Joseph River in 1829. The same Pulaski Post Office was officially renamed to Elkhart in 1839.

Several musical instrument factories, Miles Medical Company and many other mills were set up here over the years that later became the main source of its economy. The first trailer factory was opened in Elkhart in 1934. Similar other companies came into fore here in duo course of time until they had a halt with the eruption of World War II. But growth picked back up after the war. Elkhart was recognized as a ‘Trailer Capital of the World’ in 1949.

There are many rumors and mysteries about the naming of this city. Once rumor explains that this city was named after an Elkhart Indian Tribe, however there is no historical evidence and proof of such tribe. Another rumor is that this Island Park of the city looked like an elk's heart. But this mystery surrounds that how Beardsley could have known what the Island looked like from the above. There is third rumor as well that says that it was the Shawnee Indian Chief Elkhart whom the neighboring Mishawaka is named after.

The 2008 census estimates notes that this city has a population of 52,700. The census bureau further describes that this city has a total area of 57.7 km², of which 55.3 km² is land and 2.3 km² is water. As Elkhart city is situated at the St. Joseph and Elkhart Rivers, it has significant impact as a tourist destination. There are many small lakes that surround this city.
