‘Edison’ is a township in Middlesex County of New Jersey in the USA. This township was incorporated as Raritan Township by an Act of New Jersey Legislature on March 17, 1870 from the portions of Piscataway and Woodbridge Townships. A few areas of it were taken to form Metuchen and Highland Park. It was renamed to Edison Township on November 10, 1954.

Money Magazine ranked this city 28th most livable small city of America, and 2nd in New Jersey in 2006. This magazine ranked it 35 out of the top 100 places to live in America in 2008. It was ranked 23rd out of 371 cities included nationwide in the 13th annual Morgan Quitno survey of America's Safest Cities in 2006. It was known as Raritan Township earlier. Its name was changed to honour inventor Thomas A. Edison in 1954.

Edison emerged as one of the fastest growing towns of New Jersey over the period. It is the fifth most populated municipality after Newark, Jersey City, Paterson and Elizabeth. Its inhabitants are middle-class and upper middle-class communities – more than 75 ethnic communities. It has large number of Jews next to Highland Park. This city has several synagogues. It has a growing Indian community. It has number of temples as well. It has good number of Muslim population. Many mosques serve this community.

This city is surrounded by Middlesex County and the New York metro area. According to the US Census reports of 2000, it has 97,687 inhabitants that make it the fifth largest municipality in New Jersey. It has 35,136 households and 25,895 families. Its population density is 3,243.0 people per 1,252.2/km². It has 36,018 housing units at an average density of 461.7/km². Its racial makeup is 59.49% Whites, 6.89% African Americans, 0.14% Native Americans, 29.27% Asians, 0.04% Pacific Islanders, 2.02% from other races and 2.15% from two or more races. Its Hispanic race is 6.37%.

Edison has manageable sex ratio at 96.3 males for every 100 females. It has 94.0 males for every 100 females aged 18 and above.
