The city of Charleston is located in Charleston County of South Carolina, United States. It was founded as Charlestown or Charles Towne in 1670, on the west bank of the river Ashley River, but it moved to Oyester Point (present location) in 1680. The city was named Charleston in 1783. As of 2007, Charleston had a population of about 118,492.

According to reports, racial/Ethnic makeup of Charleston is 65.2% White Americans, 31.6% Black Americans, 1.6% Asian Americans, and 2.4% Hispanics or Latino (who may be of any race).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 347.5 square kilometers (134.2 sq mi). 251.2 km2 (97.0 sq mi) of it is land and 44.3 km2 (17.1 sq mi) (15%) of it is water.

Charleston is popularly known as the Holy City, as it is home to numerous Churches. Apart from these, it has several museums and other historical attractions. The Old Exchange and Customs House, the Fort Moultrie National Monument, the South Carolina Aquarium, the Audubon Swamp Garden and the Cypress Gardens are a few to name among the famous attractions in Charleston.

Charleston is home to some of the professional minor league and amateur sports teams, including the Charleston Battery (soccer), the Charleston RiverDogs, (Minor League Baseball team), the South Carolina Stingrays (ice hockey team). The Blackbaud Stadium, the Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, the North Charleston Coliseum, the Family Circle Magazine Stadium and the Johnson Hagood Stadium are the notable sports venues in Charleston.
