Situated on the east shore of San Francisco Bay in Northern California, ‘Berkeley’ is a major city of the USA. It is surrounded by the cities of Oakland and Emeryville to the south, and Albany and unincorporated community of Kensington to the north. Its eastern border coincides with county line that often follows ridge line of Berkeley Hills.

An integral part of the northern Alameda County, Berkeley is home to oldest campus of the University of California. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Hall of Science, Space Sciences Laboratory and Mathematical Sciences Research Institute are the part of this campus.

De Anza Expedition of 1776 was the first troupe from European ancestry arriving here. That Expedition resulted into the establishment of Spanish Presidio of San Francisco at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. The city had decline in population in 1970 due to an exodus to the suburbs. A few of its inhabitants shifted from here due to rising cost in the Bay Area. Another reason sought is decline of many industries in the Western Berkeley.

The Census Bureau cites that this city has a total area of 17.7 sq mi, of which 10.5 sq mi is land and 7.2 sq mi is water. According to 2000 census, Berkeley has 102,743 inhabitants, 44,955 households and 18,656 families. Its population density is 9,823.3 people per square mile. It has 46,875 housing units at an average density of 4,481.8/sq mi. Its racial makeup is 59.17% Whites, 16.39% Asians, 13.63% African Americans, 0.45% Native Americans, 0.14% Pacific Islanders, 4.64% from other races and 5.57% from two or more races.

The city has 9.73% Hispanic or Latino population. Its non-Hispanic whites are 55.18% of the total population. Census reports further elaborates that this city is inhabited by 7.3% Germans, 7.2% English and 6.3% Irish. Its 73.1% population speak English, 8.3% Spanish, 4.5% Chinese or Mandarin, 1.6% French, 1.2% Korean, 1.1% Japanese and 1.0% German as first language.

The sex ratio of this city is 96.5 males for every 100 females, whereas for every 100 females aged 18 and above, it has 95.1 males.
