Baton Rouge emerged as one of the fastest growing cities in the category of technology in 2000. Its population has exploded after Hurricane Katrina due to the arrival of people from around the Gulf Coast flocking inland for safety that turned into its residents.

It dates back to 1699, when French explorer Sieur d'Iberville led an exploration team at the Mississippi River. The team saw a reddish cypress pole that was festooned with the animals and fish that marked its boundary between Houma and Bayou Goula tribal hunting grounds. The explorers named this tree ‘le baton rouge,’ or red stick. Baton Rouge functioned under seven governing bodies since European settlement including France, England, Spain, Louisiana, the Florida Republic, the Confederate States and the United States.

Baton Rouge was incorporated in 1817. It became state capital of Louisiana in 1849. As per the statistics of the US Census Bureau, this city has a total area of 79.1 square miles, of which 76.8 square miles is land and 2.2 square miles is water area. This city has humid-subtropical with mild, short, wet and warm winters. It has long, hot, humid and wet summers. The 2000 census notes that its population is 227,818 people, 88,973 households and 52,672 families reside here. Its population density is 2,964.7 people per square mile.
